SUSTAINABILITY IN ACTION

We believe sustainability is a call to action to foster awareness of the world that surrounds us, based on three pillars:

Environmental

We are guests on this earth, and we need to steward its resources wisely

Social

We support the communities that surround us and we are committed to their empowerment

Economic

We believe economic progress is something to be shared

ENVIRONMENTAL

We are guests on this earth, and we need to steward its resources wisely

ENERGY

Nearly 1,400 solar panels provide about 7% of our hotels’ electricity consumption with renewable energy provided by the sun, representing the largest solar farm installed by its parent company FIFCO, contributing to reduce 40 tons of carbon dioxide per year. The street lights are also part of the solar initiatives that Reserva Conchal incentivates.

WATER

BE H2OK

We launched an initiative in 2019 to promote the refilling of reusable water bottles, giving our community a way to reduce their plastic footprint. This effort seeks to stop the use of plastic for drinking water inside Reserva Conchal.

DESALINATION PLANT
We launched the country’s first desalination plant as part of our groundbreaking sustainable practices, employing a process that removes salt from seawater and then re-mineralizes it to provide fresh water for irrigation or human consumption.

WASTE WATER TREATMENT PLANTS

Reserva Conchal has invested in state-of-the-art irrigation system with artificial intelligence data to prevent leaking and overwatering. This system is tied into the resort property’s on-site treatment plant, where wastewater from the two hotels is recycled for the golf course greens and garden areas.

EARTH

Seeking to empower local women in the community, we launched an organic farming initiative called “Hortalizas Najui.” (“Hortalizas” are vegetables, and “Najui” is a Chorotega word for women). The organic vegetables are sold to the restaurants at the Westin and W hotels, as well as to homeowners and visitors, and the remains are sold at the local farmer’s market.

This joint initiative from Reserva Conchal and the National Agricultural Technology Institute (INTA) is already showing impressive results, incorporating a hydroponic watering system that recycles the water daily. In addition, compost produced on-site from the resort’s hotel wastes provides fertile growing soil.

TREE NURSERY:

Over the past 10 years, we have planted more than 15,000 trees in the Reserva Conchal nursery, which protects, preserves and enhances the natural development of endemic species in the area.

BOKASHI, THE INTELLIGENT USE OF ORGANIC WASTE
Reserva Conchal produces more than 45 monthly tons of its own organic fertilizer, known by the Japanese word “bokashi,” for maintenance of the nursery and green areas.

WILDLIFE RESERVE

Take a stroll though the trails of a national wildlife refuge that encompasses a broad range of ecosystems, including tropical dry forest, an estuary and a mangrove swamp. Our 96-acre wildlife sanctuary is home to 32 species of birds, 12 types of mammals, eight species of reptiles, several amphibians and an amazing range of plants.

WASTE MANAGEMENT

We contribute to sustainability by classifying, separating and managing all our waste products using the most environmentally, socially and economically prudent practices. Currently we reuse or recycle 85% of our total waste in order to minimize our environmental impact.

Staff teams work diligently to find the most appropriate vendors to dispose of or recycle waste. We also seek to inspire other organizations to understand the value of treating waste with respect and disposing of it in a responsible way.
